Student Handbook


May 13th to 17th 2024

The Great Lakes Institutes of Photographers-Board of Directors welcome you to the 28th annual Great Lakes Institute of Photography. To become familiar with the benefits and campus activities, we sincerely encourage you to go through this entire handbook. GLIP convenes one week out of every year in May for the purpose of educating and aspiring professional photographers.




REGISTRATION WILL BE IN The DoubleTree LOBBY 4-5:00pm
CLASSES WILL START AT 7:00pm Monday night.

Please plan your travel to be on time Self-Parking is Free at the Hotel

This will be a good time to see old friends and meet new ones. The orientation and all school program will be at 6:30 pm All students are required to attend! Those not present at registration & orientation will not be issued packets and badges.


MEALS
Lunch every day is sponsored by GLIP and is included in your tuition. These are great meals and are free to all students. Breakfast and dinner are on your own. There are several convenient places to eat.

LODGING
The “official” headquarters will be the DoubleTree in Bay City Be sure to request this group rate, and we advise that your reservation is for the Great Lakes Institute of Photography (GLIP). Some evening functions will be held at the hotel.

Please check with your instructor – no video cameras will be permitted in any class without permission.
NO CHILDREN OR SPOUSES ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM


ATTENDING SCHOOL
The training facilities are at the DoubleTree Bay City. Registration goes from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Monday Orientation and classes begin Monday evening at 6:30 pm. Class runs daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with some instructors having evening sessions with their class. On Thursday class ends at 5:00.

PPA MERITS
GLIP is authorized to offer 2 PPA merits for attending the GLIP School. In order for you to receive these merits, you MUST BE a member of the Professional Photographers of America and attend the prescribed hours required through Thursday noon. The merits are handed to the student after class has been completed. It is your responsibility to furnish us with your PPA number ON YOUR REGISTRATION FORM.

CLASS PHOTOGRAPH
A class photograph will be taken during the early part of the week. Please wear your GLIP t-shirt for the photograph. You will be notified when and where the photographs are to be taken.

PUBLICITY PHOTOGRAPH
A publicity photograph with the instructor is the option of the instructor. Though the instructors are not required to do so, we certainly encourage you to for your own scrapbook or publicity in your local newspaper. This is an excellent way to receive valuable publicity.

WORKSHOP EVALUATION
Each student will have an opportunity to fill out a workshop evaluation. Let us know your thoughts, both positive and negative. We are always seeking to improve your Great Lakes Institute of Photography experience.

MODELS
Our models are volunteers. They may ask you to send them digital files, as this is their only compensation. Please follow through if you promise images!

STUDENT PACKET
At the beginning of the course, you will receive a notebook. The digital class portrait will be posted and PPA Merits, (if you are eligible) will be uploaded to your account. At the end of the week, you will receive a GLIP certificate, and a class list so that you can keep track of the friends you have made at GLIP.

STUDENT “NEED LIST” FOR CLASSES
Some instructors have specific items they would like for you to bring. Watch for info.
DRESS INFORMALLY. YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES AND EASY WALKING SHOES.


PREFERRED ALUMNI LIST
Once an alumni of GLIP, you will be given a preferred announcement/mailing status and be the first to receive our new class information for the following year.

for the insight to improve your professional image and helping us to better serve our profession. This is going to be an awesome year at Great Lakes Institute of Photography! There is a schedule on the website that is intended to give a basic framework of the week. A new schedule will be published before the school with the final changes.

WAIVER OF LIABILITY
Great Lakes Institute of Photography shall have no responsibility or liability for personal injury to any participant or loss or damage to any participant’s property, or for personal injuries or damage to the property of another person resulting from the participant’s involvement in any workshop or school activity. Great Lake Institute of Photography
shall have no responsibility for the acts, errors or omissions of instructors, staff, or other providers of service to participants during the school.


Withdrawal/Cancellation/Refund Policies
Tuition includes a non-refundable registration fee ($100).

Refunds will be issued under the following guidelines:

 

  •     June 1st through Sept 1st Full Tuition minus fee

  •     Sept 2nd through December 31st Half Tuition minus fee

  •     After Jan 1st, NO REFUNDS with exception of an emergency

  •     (deposit can be rolled over to following season or refunded by board decision)
